How this estimate works
- Risk budget = (account size × risk percentage) ÷ 100.
- Risk per share = entry price − stop price.
- Whole shares are rounded down from risk budget ÷ risk per share, then capped by the whole shares your account can afford at entry.
Illustrative example
Illustrative only: with a $10,000 account, a 1% risk percentage, a $50 entry, and a $45 stop, the risk budget is $100 and the risk per share is $5. The estimate is 20 whole shares: a $1,000 position value and $100 stop-distance risk before gaps, slippage, fees, or taxes. Realized loss can differ.
Position size calculator FAQ
- Why does the estimate round down?
- The tool plans whole shares. Rounding down keeps the calculated stop-distance risk within the entered risk budget before the affordability cap is applied.
- Why can the stop-distance risk be lower than my risk budget?
- A whole-share result may leave a small unused amount, and the estimate is also capped at the whole shares the account can afford at the entry price.
- Will the planned risk equal my realized loss?
- Not necessarily. The estimate assumes an exit at the entered stop. Gaps, slippage, and fees can change realized loss. Choose the risk percentage yourself; this tool does not recommend one. Read the SEC Investor Bulletin on stop orders.
